Paper published in Nature Materials

Our recent work is published in the August 2018 issue of Nature Materials. We show that it is possible to built a phase change memory based on a pure chemical element. Our article is accompanied by a perspective of Wei Zhang and Evan Ma. Our partners at IBM Research Zurich wrote a brief blog article including a short video clip about our joint publication.

The cover of the August 2018 issue of the Nature Materials illustrates our research. It shows the benefit of the simplified monatomic phase change memory: Complicated materials with different dopants are represented as convoluted walls of a maze. The mixtures of materials are alternative paths, but each only leads so far. The mixing itself eventually turns into an obstacle. In contrast, our monatomic approach cuts through that maze in a very straight forward fashion with the potential to reach far towards the horizon. At the same time, each block of material contains ensembles of atoms in both amorphous and crystalline configurations symbolizing the essence of phase change memories. Finally, the nano-confinement is visualized by transparent boxes surrounding a limited number of atomic layers.
